Bookstores We Love: Still North Books & Bar
In celebration of the spirit of independent bookstores, in each edition of our 2026 newsletter we’ll feature a New Hampshire bookseller. This month we are shining a spotlight on Still North Books in Hanover, NH.
Hanover’s Still North Books was founded in 2018 by Allie Levy, who’d worked in publishing in New York City and had recently decided to return to the Upper Valley. The Dartmouth Bookstore, then run by Barnes & Noble, had just closed, and Levy decided to open a bookstore in part of the old Dartmouth Bookstore space. The new Still North Books would be a smaller, cozier space, with a curated but well-rounded book list, and its front door on Allen Street.
Still North is known for its café and wine bar, and it’s become a vibrant gathering spot for college students and writers—at any hour, you’ll find patrons with their coffee or wine, and a book or a laptop, seated at tables throughout the store and cafe, and outside the store in nice weather. Still North also has an active events calendar, with game nights, shared events with Hanover’s Howe Library, and regular author events.

“This book wouldn't let me go until I'd chugged it all down. Moments of stunning imagery erupt from the simmering, indefinable relationship between Jules (bar owner, recently divorced) and Nim (her newest employee). Their entanglement only becomes more inflamed when Nim becomes pregnant by Jules' ex husband. It's a love story and a surrogate story and a thick smoothie with a lingering aftertaste... I'll be thinking about this one for a long time!”
